About Us

Innate creates cleanly designed storage solutions for food, drink and outdoor travel.

We’re a young, growing business based in Vancouver, Canada; a city surrounded by mountains and water that provides perpetual inspiration and a field testing feedback loop for our product design team.

Innate is derived from the Latin word Innatus, which refers to the inborn characteristics that are part of one's inner essential nature. At Innate, our inborn qualities, or DNA, include a commitment to being a progressive participant in our global community by following transparent business practices. We strive to make carefully considered choices to produce the best possible products with a reduced ecological footprint in keeping with our philosophy of Leaner, Cleaner, Greener.

We have a simple goal; that you experience lasting satisfaction from our products and recommend them to your family and friends.

Innate is derived from the Latin word Innatus, which refers to the inborn characteristics that are part of one's inner essential nature. At Innate, our inborn qualities, or DNA, include a commitment to being a progressive participant in our global community by following transparent business practices.

We strive to deliver on this commitment by making carefully considered choices in materials and manufacturing. These choices can be traced through a transparent chain of custody, which details where and how our products are made. This includes the tracking and third-party testing of raw materials, as well as following set engagement and remediation processes that help us resolve the tough environmental, labor and workplace safety issues in our contract production facilities.

Making this commitment isn't easy and following through is often tougher. To guide us in our day-to-day actions we have developed a series of governance documents or "guard-rails" as we call them.

Our Statement of Purpose defines what we do, our Values and Supporting Actions detail how we do it. The 'how' includes the Innate Sourcing Policy, Product Sustainability Commitment and Supplier Code of Conduct. If you have questions about these policies, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions section.

At Innate we create storage solutions for food, drink and outdoor travel that combine LEANER designs with CLEANER production processes which move us toward GREENER product. Moving beyond slogans, this is about minimizing our ecological footprint; a metaphor for the total impact we have on the planet when we make a product or do an activity like drive a car.

The term ecological footprint is a sprawling and complex issue; it matters though, because the impacts of our actions contribute to human-made climate change. This is different from the term carbon footprint which is used when talking about climate change. A carbon footprint is shorthand for all the different greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

Measuring an ecological or carbon footprint is complex; the the most common mistake is to neglect a large portion of impacts in the activity or item under discussion. For example a person or a business may measure their carbon footprint but look only at their immediate activities, such as personal travel of daily operations. Meanwhile, the much greater emissions caused by activities of their raw material suppliers or finished products are ignored. This is often referred to as a “toe-print” since it doesn’t give the full picture.

Think of footprint measurement as ecological morality; it’s about striving to get the complete picture of activity or product related impacts on the planet. Recent legislation in many countries helps ensure specific harmful substances or processes are controlled or not used. Despite these positive developments, information around the true footprint of a given product continues to be inconsistent and confusing.

It would be nearly impossible for us as individuals to find the information or time to analyze every aspect of an industrial process, balance the good with the bad and then make a decision for a given product. Governments can help level the global playing field by passing legislation to help ensure that consistent information be available with third party verification. Meanwhile, a solid initiative by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, an industry-wide group of leading apparel and footwear brands, retailers, manufacturers, non-governmental organizations, academic experts and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is working to reduce the environmental and social impacts of apparel and footwear products.

In our own small and humble way, Innate and a number of our suppliers are active participants in the implementation of ecological indexes that will hopefully lead to a tool you will be able to use to make informed product choices for the health of the planet. Like the parable of the Good Samaritan; the effects of global trade mean we are all neighbours; everything we do has an effect in some way on all the others.

We here at Innate have a long way to achieve complete transparency throughout our supply chain, but we are focused on continuous improvement. As a young company, there are we have made choices we have made such as using repurposed and recycled materials that have a clear footprint reduction..

There are many issues though, that are beyond our immediate control such as the extraction and transport of raw materials, or delays in our supply chain that result in air freight to meet our customer’s deadlines. At Innate, we are striving to take ownership of our challenges and let you know what we are doing.
