We were wrong. In 2009 the Innate team made the tough call to pass on joining the Conservation Alliance, and instead invest extra funds into developing materials and processes that would minimize our ecological footprint to support our philosophy of Leaner Cleaner Greener.

MoreHow Green Is My Bottle?
DANIEL GOLEMAN and GREGORY NORRIS, New York Times
Published: 2011-02-24
Earth Day is this Wednesday, and all things “green” will be celebrated. But it’s worth asking: how environmentally friendly are “green” products, really? Consider, for example, this paragon of eco-virtue: the stainless steel water bottle that lets us hydrate without discarding endless plastic bottles. Using a method called life cycle assessment, we have evaluated the environmental and health impact of a stainless steel thermos — from the extraction and processing of its ingredients, to its manufacture, distribution, use and final disposal. There were some surprises. What we think of as “green” turns out to be less so (and, yes, sometimes more so) than we assume.

Last summer I met Greg Foweraker, Innate’s CEO, at the Outdoor show in Germany and over a great dinner we talked about form follows function design philosophy and the challenges and commitments for brands when producing gear from environmentally progressive materials. I recall driving to my hotel after dinner interested in exploring a collaboration with Innate, but at the same time wanting to push them to do more work on "closing the loop" at the end of the useful life of their products. Over the years I have become very passionate about closed loop products and I truly enjoy encouraging/pushing brands to improve their sustainability with a carbon footprint sensibility in mind.
